The 2013 Arnie Abrams Award

During an awards ceremony celebrating the contributions of more than 450 statewide volunteers, the Florida Department of Elder Affairs’ SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders) program announced Joseph "Joe" Schuerger, a Brevard County volunteer, as the award winner for the Arnie Abrams Volunteer of the Year.

Who We Are

SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders) is a free program offered by the Florida Department of Elder Affairs and your local Area Agency on Aging. Specially trained volunteers can assist you with your Medicare, Medicaid, and health insurance questions by providing one-on-one counseling and information. SHINE services are free, unbiased, and confidential.

Our Mission

The SHINE program supports the Florida Department of Elder Affairs’ mission by providing free and unbiased health insurance counseling through a dedicated network of volunteers, empowering Florida seniors to make informed health care choices.

Special Enrollment Period Deadline Approaching for Universal Health Care, Inc. Members

You can join another Medicare Advantage Plan or other Medicare health plan, including a plan that offers prescription drug coverage during a special enrollment period anytime between now and May 31, 2013.  Consider your options carefully.  For help understanding this process, please contact your local SHINE Program by calling 1-800-963-5337.  You may also receive assistance from SHINE at a counseling site in your community.  To view a listing of sites in your county, click on the "Counseling Sites" tab above.
